  • When to refer

    Please note the RCH Complex Obesity Assessment Service has recently changed their referral criteria. 

    The RCH Complex Obesity Assessment Service is a quaternary multidisciplinary service providing assessment for children and young people with complex clinical obesity.

    Consistent with internationally accepted criteria, the Complex Obesity Assessment Service only accepts referrals for complex clinical obesity.

    Referral criteria:

    Youth is aged <17 years at time of referral

    BMI >95th percentile AND has

    • Neurodevelopmental disability (ASD, ID) or physical disability OR other medical diagnosis necessitating ongoing specialist paediatric care 
    • AND diagnosed obesity related comorbidity requiring tertiary hospital care:

    Comorbidity Criteria Referrals/investigations to be completed by the referring GP/Paediatrician in addition to Complex Clinical Obesity Service referral if these services are not already being accessed
    LFT abnormality ALT higher than 2x the upper laboratory limit Gastroenterology
    Impaired glucose tolerance HbA1c > 5.7 OGTT (please forward results to Complex Clinical Obesity Service)
    Hyperlipidaemia
    • Total cholesterol > 6
    • LDL cholesterol > 3.5
    Hypertension As per RCH hypertension clinical practice guideline Nephrology
    Obstructive sleep apnoea Demonstrated on overnight oximetry or sleep study Respiratory Medicine
    Orthopaedic SUFE
    • Orthopaedics
    • Physiotherapist and/or exercise physiologist

    Baseline data to be included in referral:

    • Weight (kg), height (cm) and BMI (kg/m2) collected within last three (3) months and additional serial measurements if available.
    • Results of investigations demonstrating obesity related comorbidity
    • Standard family history and physical examination, including blood pressure with an appropriately sized BP cuff and medications.
